About Precision Federal
Precision Federal is a small business building AI, data and software systems for government agencies. The company’s founder loves God, and the company is built on Christian faith: every number we publish is real, every claim we make is verifiable, and the work is done with excellence as service to God. Faith is welcome here and openly shared.
How this role works
- You join the bench. You apply with your weekly hours and start time. We set your hourly rate from your résumé, and we may name you on proposals that match this role. If we don't win, you owe nothing.
- A contract is awarded. The award funds the team named in the proposal. Your engagement begins at the hourly rate we agreed on.
- You work remote, paid from the contract. ~160–800 hrs per funded award — and if no award ever funds, you owe nothing and lose nothing.
What you'll do
- Build machine learning and statistical models on water resources data such as streamflow, precipitation, reservoir operations, flood risk and water supply
- Write and maintain production code for those models inside a federal cloud environment, working alongside our cloud and data engineers
- Check model results against hydrology and real operations, and tell us where an approach breaks on messy gauge records or missing data
- Be named on a federal proposal with your resume, with rate, weekly hours and start date agreed in writing before anything is submitted and all work contingent on award
Required qualifications
- Data scientist path: a master's in computer programming, advanced statistics or a modeling field plus 3 or more years as a subject-matter expert on large water resources projects, or a bachelor's plus 5 or more years, and 5 or more years supporting federal projects, studies or decisions
- AI engineer path: a master's in computer science with an AI focus plus 3 or more years in a water resources field, at least 2 of them as a subject-matter expert
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (U.S. person)
- Willing to be named on a federal proposal with a one-page resume, and to sign a short letter of commitment
Preferred qualifications
- Project experience with USGS, NOAA, FEMA, the Bureau of Reclamation, EPA or another federal water resources agency
- Hands-on work with hydrologic and hydraulic models, time-series forecasting or water data systems
- Python, R or similar on a cloud platform such as AWS or Azure, with models running in production
- Web developers with real water resources project experience are welcome too
