How this role works
- You join the bench. We name you (with a short bio) as a proposed consultant on proposals that match this role. Consent costs you nothing and commits you to nothing until an award funds.
- A contract is awarded. Federal SBIR awards fund the team named in the proposal. Your engagement begins, at an hourly rate agreed before you were ever named.
- You work remote, paid from the contract. ~40–80 hrs per funded award — and if no award ever funds, you owe nothing and lose nothing.
What you'll do
- Reach churches, ministries and faith groups on reservations and in tribal communities by phone and email, and confirm they're willing to help people coming home from prison
- Screen each group, and the volunteer mentors they offer, against the program's criteria, and enter the confirmed ones in the directory
- Reach Spanish-speaking congregations too, if you speak Spanish
- Suggest ways to grow the directory in tribal communities. The Bureau's goal is to grow the number of Native American faith groups in the directory by 200% in the first year
- Help run the program's reentry focus group and staff its booth at national reentry events, travel paid
Required qualifications
- Native American. The Bureau of Prisons contract requires one team member who is Native American, and the Bureau says tribal nations establish that identity. Please tell us your tribe or tribal nation
- At least three years of ministry or faith-based outreach: as a pastor, minister, chaplain or ministry leader, in prison or jail ministry, or with churches and faith-based nonprofits
- Comfortable talking with pastors and community leaders by phone and email, and entering what you learn into an online database
- Able to pass a federal background check (DOJ Public Trust; the government pays for it), with three of the last five years lived in the United States
- Available full-time, about 40 hours a week
Preferred qualifications
- Pastor, minister or chaplain
- Fluent Spanish
- Prison or jail ministry, chaplaincy, or work in corrections, probation, law enforcement or reentry
- A master's or doctorate in divinity, theology, ministry, sociology or psychology, such as an MDiv, DMin or PhD
- Experience screening or assessing people or programs: intake, case management, counseling or volunteer screening
- Experience on a reservation or in a tribal community, or with a tribal government, tribal health or social services
- Work alongside social workers, case managers, chaplains or other professionals
Compensation & structure
1099 consulting engagement. $60–$100 per hour, confirmed in writing before you are named on any proposal. Hours are funded by federal contract awards — engagements on this bench have ranged from roughly 130 to 710 hours across a period of performance, fully remote. Work and pay begin only if the contract is awarded — no award, no hours, no obligation.
