Marine Biologist & Scientific Diver, Field Lead (Hawaii)

Lead our marine field work in Hawaii, in the water and on deck, so the survey data we build on is collected safely and collected right. Hawaii-based, in person, W-2.

About Precision Federal

Precision Federal is a small business building AI, data and software systems for government agencies. The company’s founder loves God, and the company is built on Christian faith: every number we publish is real, every claim we make is verifiable, and the work is done with excellence as service to God. Faith is welcome here and openly shared.

How this role works

  1. You join the bench. You apply with your weekly hours and start time. We set your hourly rate from your résumé, and we may name you on proposals that match this role. If we don't win, you owe nothing.
  2. A contract is awarded. The award funds the team named in the proposal. Your engagement begins at the hourly rate we agreed on.
  3. You work remote, paid from the contract. ~160–800 hrs per funded award — and if no award ever funds, you owe nothing and lose nothing.

What you'll do

  • Lead field days in Hawaii from dive plan to data hand-off, and keep the team safe and on protocol
  • Run underwater surveys yourself, including transects, quadrats, species counts and imagery
  • Tell us where a sampling design or data model breaks on real reefs, real conditions and real divers
  • Check our data products and findings against what you saw in the water before they reach the Government

Required qualifications

  • Degree in marine biology, marine ecology or a related field, with hands-on field survey experience in tropical or nearshore waters
  • Current scientific diver status under an AAUS or equivalent program, with a current log and current first aid, CPR and oxygen provider training
  • Lives in Hawaii and can work in person at field sites as a W-2 employee
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (U.S. person)
  • Willing to be named on a federal proposal with a one-page resume, and to sign a short letter of commitment

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience as a field lead, dive supervisor or diving safety officer designee
  • Strong Hawaiian reef species identification across corals, fishes, invertebrates and algae
  • Photoquadrat, SfM photogrammetry or video survey methods
  • Small boat operation and prior work with federal, state or university marine programs in Hawaii

Compensation & structure

1099 consulting engagement. $25–$60 per hour; we set your rate from your résumé and experience. Hours are funded by federal contract awards — this seat is scoped at roughly 160–800 hours per funded award, fully remote. Work and pay begin only if the contract is awarded — no award, no hours, no obligation.

Every application is read. It takes about 5 minutes.

  • This is a bench, not a job offer. Work starts when we win a contract that needs you.
  • We may name you on proposals. If that contract is awarded, you do the role at the rate and hours we agree on.
  • Paid hourly as a 1099 contractor; full-time roles may be W-2. If your background fits, we will email you.
