1099 consultant · ~120–600 hrs per funded award · $45–$100/hr · Remote (U.S.)

CFD Engineer, Hypersonics

Run high-fidelity simulations of hypersonic nozzles and shock tubes, and help us understand how disturbances travel through the flow to the test article.

About Precision Federal

Precision Federal is a small business building AI, data and software systems for government agencies. The company’s founder loves God, and the company is built on Christian faith: every number we publish is real, every claim we make is verifiable, and the work is done with excellence as service to God. Faith is welcome here and openly shared.

How this role works

  1. You join the bench. You apply with your weekly hours and start time. We set your hourly rate from your résumé, and we may name you on proposals that match this role. If we don't win, you owe nothing.
  2. A contract is awarded. The award funds the team named in the proposal. Your engagement begins at the hourly rate we agreed on.
  3. You work remote, paid from the contract. ~120–600 hrs per funded award — and if no award ever funds, you owe nothing and lose nothing.

What you'll do

  • Build and run large-eddy simulations of hypersonic nozzles and shock tubes, from grids and boundary conditions through post-processing
  • Model how acoustic, entropy and vorticity disturbances form and travel through the nozzle into the test section
  • Compare results against tunnel and shock-tube measurements and tell us plainly where the simulation holds and where it doesn't
  • Write up methods, grid studies and findings clearly enough that a Government reviewer can check them

Required qualifications

  • Hands-on LES or DNS of compressible, high-speed flows, with results you can show
  • Working knowledge of shock-capturing schemes, wall modeling, and turbulent inflow or disturbance boundary conditions
  • Experience running CFD codes at scale on HPC clusters
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (U.S. person)
  • Willing to be named on a federal proposal with a one-page resume, and to sign a short letter of commitment

Preferred qualifications

  • Hypersonic wind tunnel or shock-tube experience, including freestream disturbance or boundary-layer transition studies
  • US3D, VULCAN, CharLES, SU2, OpenFOAM or an in-house high-order solver
  • Able to work on-site in northwest Florida for part of the effort
  • PhD in aerospace or mechanical engineering, or an equivalent research record

Compensation & structure

1099 consulting engagement. $45–$100 per hour; we set your rate from your résumé and experience. Hours are funded by federal contract awards — this seat is scoped at roughly 120–600 hours per funded award, fully remote. Work and pay begin only if the contract is awarded — no award, no hours, no obligation.

Join the bench — CFD Engineer, Hypersonics

Every application is read. It takes about 5 minutes.

  • This is a bench, not a job offer. Work starts when we win a contract that needs you.
  • We may name you on proposals. If that contract is awarded, you do the role at the rate and hours we agree on.
  • Paid hourly as a 1099 contractor; full-time roles may be W-2. If your background fits, we will email you.
