How this role works
- You join the bench. You apply with your weekly hours and start time. We set your hourly rate from your résumé, and we may name you on proposals that match this role. If we don't win, you owe nothing.
- A contract is awarded. The award funds the team named in the proposal. Your engagement begins at the hourly rate we agreed on.
- You work remote, paid from the contract. ~40–700 hrs per funded award — and if no award ever funds, you owe nothing and lose nothing.
What you'll do
- Celebrate weekend Masses and Holy Day Masses, and hear confessions, at the NAS Oceana and Dam Neck Annex chapels in Virginia Beach
- Celebrate the sacraments, including baptisms, marriages, anointing of the sick and funerals
- Support religious education such as RCIA and CCD alongside the chapel's lay leaders and volunteers
- Offer pastoral counseling and keep Tuesday office hours so service members and families know when and where to find you
- Occasionally serve at other nearby military installations within about 25 miles
- As a substitute, step in on short notice to cover Masses and sacraments when the regular priest is away
Required qualifications
- Ordained Roman Catholic priest in good standing, acceptable to and holding ecclesiastical faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS)
- Approved DD Form 2088 ecclesiastical endorsement, or the ability to obtain one before starting
- References from your diocese or religious order
- Able to qualify for a Confidential security clearance
- Not currently serving as a uniformed military chaplain
- Able to be on site in Virginia Beach, VA each week, or on call for substitute coverage
- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (U.S. person)
- Willing to be named on a federal proposal with a one-page resume, and to sign a short letter of commitment
Preferred qualifications
- Prior military chaplaincy, or parish ministry near a military community
- Experience leading RCIA, CCD or other parish religious education
- Pastoral counseling training or experience with military families, deployment and transition
